Thursday 9th March
Yeeeessss! I’ve just worked out how to link to a video, so here’s the video that should have been in the first post! https://1drv.ms/f/s!AksnrQT2cvoGhRUJLfYnXY4r-4PW
So today we went into Esperance to catch up with friends Dave and Jane, who we try to see when we’re down this way. I’ve probably mentioned this when we’ve been here before but Dave and his two friends, Bob and George have basically built the Belltower here themselves.

The tower is almost finished now, well until they think of something else to build into it! The ‘piece de resistance’ is, however, must be the ‘automaton’. This consists of six figures that are loosely or perhaps not so loosely based on characters on the Shire Council, ie; arrogance (the King’s new clothes), intelligence, domination, honesty and providence. The ‘builders’ are not enamoured of the Shire, the level of support, or the speed with which it operates, hence the characters exit the tower through one pair of doors and re-enter through the second set to the music of Schubert’s, Funeral March. (Middle photo) The latin inscription ‘respici te post mortalis te esse memento’, which translates as ‘look behind you, remember you are mortal’ but in context, ‘consider that you could be stabbed in the back’! (It is written along the top of the cone-like structure that provides the track for the automaton).
After catching up with Dave and Jane we headed back to the campsite – there’s still water over the road down to Benwenerup campsite (Stokes Inlet), which doesn’t seem to be drying out very quickly.
Friday 10th March
Did some work on the caravan hitch this morning and ran the genny to top up the batteries since it has been pretty overcast for a few days.
The sun came out after lunch and we decided to walk out to the sand bar that normally separates the ocean from the inlet but which is currently open to the ocean due to a combination of heavy run off running into the Inlet and some high tides.
It’s a lovely walk round the shores of the inlet and in about 45 mins we’re out on the burst sand bar in a blustery wind. The water into the inlet is pouring in and under-cutting one of the banks.
