Winter 2023 around the Sunshine Coast

Saturday 1st July

We’re in Pomona staying on our friends property, as previously described and it is still quite cold, for this part of QLD.

We have had several jobs to do on the caravan which are gradually being ticked off.

The 300 (Landcruiser) went in for a service this week, all is OK except for the tyres which seem to be ‘cracking’! Apparently the suppliers of new cars fit ‘relatively soft’ tyres at low pressure to new cars (4 x 4) so that you get a smooth quiet ride! Having driven ours for probably 10,000ks on dirt roads it’s little wonder that they are weakened, hence the puncture! So, we’ve had an expense we hadn’t planned, ie; 4 new tyres!

These are a few photos from around the surrounding area up in the hills;

These shots are looking from the ‘hinterland’ to the coast at Noosa, Coolum Beach and Maroochydore.

On Sunday we went to a show of Heritage Crafts and skills in Gympie, some of them were demonstrated by people from the Riverbend Historical Society. We haven’t got any photos of the Woodshed where we were amazed at the different skills and the things that were produced from comfort birds to guitars. There was also a pavilion full of things for quilting and a display of all the techniques in an amazing exhibition of of the finished products. There were opportunities to ‘have a go’ and outside the wheelwright, vintage vehicles and a whole lot more.

This lady was inkle weaving.

This man was making leather items,……………..and these two were making candles and copper wire jewellery.

This guy made whips. I wondered if there was still a market for whips, since most of the mustering is done from helicopters, trail bikes, etc. Apparently, he makes short ones for the ‘trail-bike’ musterers and a lot for whip-cracking performers.

This chap was very interesting, he was originally a drummer from Bolton but on a visit to Africa he was introduced to Kamele Ngomi, a kind of harp, made from gourds. The sound is remarkably soothing.

Here are a few of the ‘big’ things that Queenslanders like to have a round the place! The Kangaroo is at a service station on the Bruce Highway and is called Matilda. She was made for the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane. On the day small joeys appeared out of her pouch, a day to remember for those local kids who dressed up and jumped about in the stadium.

This looks like a film set scrapyard!

Anyway, we’re leaving our friends in Pomona today (Wed) and heading a bit further north where we hope to ‘grab’, i.e., ring for the first time, at the practice night at the Anglican Church in Bundaberg.
