Winter 2017 Day 5

Our camp site last night was at The Breakaways, some 30 ks up the GCR east of Laverton.   There are places called the ‘The Breakaways’ all over the country because it describes the countryside, essentially places where the land has been eroded away, by the wind and rain and resulted in steep scarps and walls.

Another fine sunny morning, with this view from the kitchen window.

We had a walk round the edge of the scarp but the wind was quite bitter and we were quite happy to get into the cruiser and begin the day’s challenges of the GCR.

The rest of today’s travelling was through typical central Australian bush, it is difficult to photograph because the vistas are vast.    The scenery is awesome, the colours range from the harsh red earth through the brilliant blue of the skies to the soft green / yellow seas of spinifex.     The road conditions vary from comfortable to varying degrees of corrugations, we keep our speed to around 65 ks/hour and with 28 psi in the tyres most of it reasonable.   Nowhere near as rough as the Savannah Way across the Gulf of Carpentaria.

We have decided on Nulleye’s Soak as our campsite tonight, we have the place to ourselves and there is plenty of firewood and we settle easily into the routine of wine and nibblies round the camp fire before dinner.
