Winter 2017Day 7 / 8

Another beautiful morning in the bush.

A leisurely start this morning we have no particular points of interest along this section of the GCR that we or Brad and Denise haven’t seen before.   The track is generally pretty reasonable but there are sections of fairly rough stuff and in a couple of places we have to slow down to 30kph.

There are several places where they are upgrading the road but the logistics of these operations is fairly difficult.   Getting a road gang, the heavy equipment along a stretch of outback where there are only three or four aboriginal communities for 1100ks must be a serious exercise.

We made reasonable progress through stunning scenery which sadly is difficult to convey by my photographic capability!

These are the Peterman Ranges.

Our camp site tonight is another lovely spot, there are a couple of other vehicles here but they are vey quiet.   We have to have a discussion about putting our clocks forward onto central time which is an hour and a half ahead.   The consensus was that we go to bed early and wake up on Central time, ie; a short night.    The discussion continued until it was too late to make any difference

So this morning Pat and I were up and breakfasted on Central Time but Brad and Denise were an hour and a half behind.     They wait until the diesel heater starting up tells them what time it is.   Unfortunately, the diesel heater’s clock was still on WST!

Then a couple arrived on the site and wanted to talk about options for camping spots and by the time we got away it was gone 1000!

In addition, this section of the GCR is really bad in places and so we did not make very good time today.    We decided to stay in the Docker River campsite tonight, another beautiful spot among Desert Oaks with the Peterman Range off to the south west.

We’re crossing the border into the Northern Territory knowing that the road conditions are going to be even worse between the border and The Olgas.   We have come about 860 ks from Laverton and as the board says there is another 682 to Alice.

Our camping spot tonight is an official site a few ks to the west of Docker River.    Docker River is an Aboriginal community, we are allowed to enter this one, they have a tore and they sell diesel but it is not a comfortable place to be.

These are the fuel pumps, as you can see, they are securely caged and locked, this is sad but necessary.   Petrol sniffing is serious problem.

There is a look out behind the campsite and we are lucky to be able to watch the sunset in the west and the moon rise in the east.
